Introducing SOWAKA: Traditional Japanese architecture engraved with over 100 years of Kyoto history to reopen as a luxury hotel
Hatanaka Co., Ltd. (representative director Seiji Hatanaka) announces the planned opening of a new luxury hotel, Sowaka, in the Gion-Yasaka area of Kyoto.
On its grand opening on March 25th, 2019, Sowaka will offer 23 rooms inspired by Japanese traditional architecture and refined aesthetics. The main building, a renovated ryotei (an exclusive traditional Japanese restaurant) built during the Taisho-era in the sukiya-zukuri style of architecture, will feature 11 rooms. A new annex, incorporating modern and traditional Japanese architectural styles, will feature another 12 rooms. The design of both buildings were entrusted to the award-winning architect Shigenori Uoya, who has dedicated his career to preserving and restoring the traditional architectures of Kyoto.
The skilled artisans’ work on the main building will give the historic ryotei new life, retaining original features of the building’s design such as the tokonoma alcoves, ranma wooden transoms and the original Japanese garden.
The new annex, designed to evoke the historic architecture of Kyoto, will incorporate individual private passageways and inner gardens reminiscent of the city’s renowned alleyways and traditional residences. The serene, quiet guest rooms combine the Japanese aesthetics of wabi-sabi with the finest modern amenities and provide a hand-crafted guest experience.
Additionally, the Michelin-starred Tokyo restaurant La BOMBANCE will open in the new annex, where diners will be able to enjoy the innovative Japanese cuisine of Chef Makoto Okamoto. The restaurant will be open to guests and non-guests starting from the hotel’s grand opening in March 2019.
As part of a special pre-Grand Opening promotion, rooms in the main building will be available beginning on November 23, 2018. Please visit our website at www.sowaka.com for more information.
